Reserve British National Champion Gelding
ANAZEH  by Jo Woodward

We first saw Bazil in 2001 at The Wales and West Show as a two year old, he was standing in the back of a trailer with the Welsh weather doing its best to dampen every ones enthusiasm.

Bazil seemed not to have a care in the world with Hugh and Michelle's children playing around him.   He was a big pink horse with a white mane and tail, we have since found out that he has a huge zest for life and an even bigger sense of humour.    Having looked at the catalogue we saw that he was by El Mokari  full brother to Sanadik El Shaklan and by whom we have the very successful ridden stallion Jalisco, twice Reserve British National Champion, not only that he was also out of Casablanca Bint Djammal sister to our very own Jammilah, Reserve British National Champion in hand, twice British National Ridden Champion and Horse of the Year Show Champion.  With so many boxes ticked already we kept an eye on this young man very carefully.

In November 2002 Bazil came to live with us at Deep Meadows but did very little due to the impending birth of Millie in 2003 and Mums illness which had been diagnosed a month before he came to us. I was already committed to rides in 2003 and booked to ride a gelding in 2004, so Bazil was put on the back burner.

When Bazil's ridden show career started in 2005 it started with much gusto.   Although only doing five shows in his first season he was second on his first outing  he then got into the swing of things winning Midland Group, Supreme Champion South West Group, Reserve Novice British National Champion and Best Novice at the International Show at Merrist Wood.

2006 and into the Open Classes where the bigger questions are asked.   Although pulled in first at nearly all of his outings Bazil's lack of experience and sense of humour began to show, but by the end of June we all got our act together and it was back to business with a win, two more Championships and then Reserve British National Champion Gelding at Malvern, making him one of those rare horses that return and win back to back titles at the Nationals.

Now at seven years old Bazil seems to have stopped growing and the colour is getting better he is becoming our gelding of a lifetime and we wouldn't swop him for the world. not least because he is a great friend for Millie who has grown up with him and can do anything with him.   Watch out Young Riders!!!
