SEAHG Summer Show 2007  Balcombe Ring – In Hand Classes

Anglo & Part Bred Breeding:

The Anglo & Part Bred breeding classes have seen a decline in entries in recent years. And whilst these classes were not huge this year the quality remained high with some notable absentees.  Those who did come forward braved the intermittent showers during the morning and enjoyed the good going which we have come to expect at the Ardingly showground.  Given that the South of England show was just a week previously the rings were superb and credit must go to the showground staff. A big thank to you all.

The first class of the day in the Balcombe Ring was the AA & PBA senior geldings.  Mrs Sue Woodhouse found her worthy winner in Ms Heaver’s bay Night Shadow (Yealand Night Owl x Arndilly Rose) followed closely by Janice Johannsson-Massey’s Mayway Momento (Mayway Boy George x Miss Hippo).  The AA & PBA mare four years and over followed and so started the Mettlewood Stud’s run of success.  In first place and winner of the Colombine Trophy kindly donated by Mrs Jean Mary Crozier was Mrs Nina Hutton McKenzie’s home bred PBA bay mare Mettlewood Liberty (Saker x Southwark Astral Storm).  This mare has been a big winner being a natural and very consistent performer.  Janice Johannsson-Massey had to again settle for second place with her bay Anglo mare Fantasica (Fawor x Kisses for Kate) with Mrs Bayman’s Libartee taking the yellow ribbon. With no foals entered and the only stallion entry not forward the AA& PBA Championship went to Mettlewood Liberty (Saker x Southwark Astral Storm) with Night Shadow (Yealand Night Owl x Arndilly Rose) in reserve.

Mrs Hutton Mckenzie was delighted when Mettlewood Liberty (Saker x Southwark Astral Storm) went forward to represent the Anglo and Part Bred category and succeeded in being awarded Reserve Supreme Champion of the Show.

The Anglo & PBA junior section also attracted quality entries. The yearling class winner was the delightful bay colt Mettlewood Morpheous (Mettlewood Jubilee Tribute x Southark Astral Storm) another home bred youngster from Mrs Nina Hutton McKenzie. Runner up was Sally Filtness’s SF Something Kinda Special (Hever Golf Ranger x Gazalah).  Both youngsters gave well behaved performances.  The only two year old forward was Mrs Hillman’s quality home bred colt Kelmstone Sea Otter (Ottergale x Kelmstone Royal Star) who went BNC at Malvern as a yearling in 2006.  There were just two three your olds forward, the winner of the Ibn Sakr Trophy being Mrs Carugiti’s Kasra’s Image  (Saker x Mayes Park Mystic VII)  with Mrs R Napier-Clark’s Stanwell Sundance (Cranleigh Elite x Stanwells Queens Flight) in the blue ribbon place. The Anglo & PBA Junior Championship was hotly contested with Kelmstone Sea Otter (Ottergale x Kelmstone Royal Star) being victorious and winning The Roedean Trophy and Mettlewood Morpheous (Mettlewood Jubilee Tribute x Southark Astral Storm) settling for the reserve rosette.

It is interesting to note that all but one class winner in the Anglo & Part Bred breeding category were home bred and received Owner Breeder rosettes.

Light Horse Breeding:

The purpose of the Light Horse & Show/Riding Pony breeding category is to give exhibitors the opportunity to compete in another class against horses and ponies of the same type.  Again entries where not high in volume but were of good quality. It seemed that the Mettlewood Stud again dominated the proceedings with Mettlewood Liberty (Saker x Southwark Astral Storm) being awarded first place in the amalgamated Light Horse & Show/Riding Pony 4 years and over class before going on to take the championship in this category.  Again Janice Johannsson-Massey had to be content with second place with Mayway Momento (Mayway Boy George x Miss Hippo) and in third place was Samantha Jones’s lovely grey horse Classic Triumph (Bamboo Saucer x Millbrook Janandrea Jewell).  This horse gave a much improved performance being more settled than in his previous class.

The Show/Riding Pony Youngstock class of 1 to 3 years olds not likely to exceed 148 cms was won by Mrs Nina Hutton McKenzie’s quality yearling PBA colt  Mettlewood Morpheous (Mettlewood Jubilee Tribute x Soutwark Astral Storm) with Mrs R Napier-Clark’s Stanwell Sundance (Cranleigh Elite x Stanwells Queens Flight) in second. Mrs Hillman’s 3 year old colt Kelmstone Sea Otter (Ottergale x Kelmstone Royal Star) was again successful in the over 148 cms class and went on to take the reserve ribbon in the Light Horse & Show/Riding Pony Breeding Championship.

The suggestion by competitors that, as in previous years, the Light Horse/Pony Breeding have a different judge to the Anglo & Part Bred Breeding is being given consideration for the future.

Special Classes:

Always well supported these classes give exhibitors the opportunity to compete in a more open forum where Pure Bred horses compete with Anglo’s and Part Bred Arabs.  This year saw some promising young handlers forward under Seamus McCormick who chose Jake Bermingham as his winner.  Jake has successfully competed in young handler classes in previous years at this show and has also competed at the AHS National Championship Show, Malvern.  Jessica Amess age 13 year took the blue rosette on this occasion with 15 year old Charlotte Bruce in third place. Well done to all who came forward, our youth is the future.

The Amateur Handlers forward took full advantage of not having to compete against the professionals, a truly level playing field.  The winner was Nina Hutton McKenzie handling lovely PBA yearling colt Mettlewood Morpheous (Mettlewood Jubilee Tribute x Soutwark Astral Storm), Second in this class was Samantha Jones’s with Classic Triumph (Bamboo Saucer x Millbrook Janandrea Jewell) while Janette Haylett took third place with her five year old Pure Bred grey mare Azadiks Anoushka (LM Luval x MA Bint Azadik).

The penultimate class in the Balcombe Ring was the veterans which is always one of my personal favourites.  It gives us the opportunity to see some old friends behaving badly and just having fun. Unfortunately this year the heavens opened up for the “oldies” but they did not let that deter them for fully enjoying their outing. The winner and oldest horse forward was Alison Dursley’s The Frosted Orange (The Prince of Orange x Holly Blue) looking superb at 25 years young and still covering mares.  Closely contested in second place stood Mrs Coombs’ 19 year old Asrah (Ahmoun x Nalina) while Miss Coopers Newholme Fine Fella (Fasif x Fancy Flight) stood third who at 24 years old received the trophy for the oldest Part Bred forward.

The final class of the day was the Family Pairs where three pairs came forward. The stunning liver chestnut pair Asrah (Ahmoun x Nalina ) and Eastworth Harri ( Asrah x Princess Netitia) owned by  Mrs Coombs retained their Autumn crown by winning the class. Second was The partbred pair owned by Mrs Nina Hutton McKenzie Mettlewood Morpheous (Mettlewood Jubilee Tribute x Soutwark Astral Storm) and Mettlewood Liberty (Saker x Southwark Astral Storm). The third pair was Nazaan ( Zircon Nazeer x Suhan) and Karizmatique (Donax X Suhan) exhibited by Mrs A Dursley and bred by Miss A Parker

Thank you all for such memorable occasion.
